BRISK AND CHILLY WALK YESTERDAY AT OUR LOCAL LAKE

Windy, foggy, chilly, - the pelicans have arrived back in town and were loving the weather as well as the seagulls.

A few scenes from our walk yesterday.

As you are looking at this photo, the lake is to the left.  I live just pass
the library, first street on the right and up several blocks around a few twists and turns.

We buy special food for the ducks and coots - and every day they get fed by us.  When they see Mike walking up with the food they all run towards him.  They have just been fed and he told them he had run out of food.  They seem to understand  and turn around and leave.

In fact, truly, when they see the bag is empty that we carry the food in, they stop following us around the lake.

I love Coot Feet.  Look at those adorable feet.  They are big like this because they can basically run on water.

Every day I photograph that red tree and it's leaves are just about gone now.

We have walked from the house to the lake, around the lake, and back home - which is about a 2 hour or so walk - lots of good exercise and so much is uphill.

Love the houses we see along the way.

A few days ago six pelicans flew in to town (just like last year at this time although there were nine last year).

They will stay during the winter but share their time between Lake Gregory and Lake Arrowhead.

This is a huge duck when you see him next to all the other mallards.  We officially named him Baby Huey, but I just call him Baby.  He is one of four ducks that will come eat out of Mike's hand.   In fact as soon as they spot us they run towards him.

I love the way your blog looks and feel inspired to change the look of mine, but I won't. I didn't know that pelicans came up to the mountain lakes. But then that's one thing I love about blogging: You always learn something new. Have a good day.

Thanks Inter. I was so surprised when we moved to Lake Gregory area that pelicans were here. We had only been here a couple weeks when I saw nine of them on a little "island" in the middle of Lake Gregory. I was so excited. There visits became sporadic so I believe they also went down to Hesperia lake where I have seen and photographed them often since then.

Then they arrived back after being gone from here in the spring and summer (although still up at Big Bear Lake where I saw them this last summer and also Hesperia lake in the summer).

Then I read that these pelicans do hang around large water sources, lakes, rivers, etc. Brown pelicans I don't believe go anywhere but the coast.

Hope all is well, in fact I'll jump over to your blog and see for myself.

Have never seen Coot feet! Well, guess I have never seen a Coot.

Wow, bet you both were ready for something warm to drink, when you got home from that great walk.

And something warm to eat too!!!!

These are really nice photos, Sandy. I think it is cool that the ducks will come and eat out of Mike's hand.

I love all your photos, but mostly I love the generosity you and your husband show towards all lovely species, and stunning photos, of course, always

Great photos! I feel cold looking at them...the chill "shows" up in the pictures! You are spoiling those creatures...hahaha...but I bet they really appreciate you guys and look forward to your visits. I like that top photo showing the road that leaves the lake and goes up towards your place.
